YOUR elected Councillors choose a Town Councillor each year to be “Chair” of Hemsworth Town Council.

For the year 2021 – 2022, your Councillors voted in the annual Town Meeting, which took place on 20 May 2021.

Mr James (Jim) Kenyon was put forward to be the Chair once again and the matter was put to the vote.

But just how did each Councillor vote?

Ferret, would have expected an important matter such as this to be recorded in the minutes from the meeting – It isn’t.

Ferret believes the voting was as follows:

FOR:

Womersley – (Independent)

Kenyon – (Independent)

Eccles G. – (Independent)

Eccles J. – (Independent)

Mitchell – (Independent)

Hirst – (Independent)

Pringle – (Independent)

AGAINST:

Hardacre – (Independent)

Bugge – (Independent)

Hird – (Labour)

Dodson – (Labour)

Westmorland A. – (Labour)

Westmorland G. – (Labour)

Why did certain Councillors support Mr Jim Kenyon to be Chair once more?

What would be the process if Mr Kenyon had not received the required amount of votes?

To elect a Chair one of the Councillors has to nominate one of the others (In this case Mr Kenyon). This is then seconded by another Councillor, and then put to the vote.

If the Candidate doesn’t reach the required number of votes the meeting would be asked to nominate another candidate. If there was no other Councillor nominated then the meeting would first of all fill the other positions that were available such as Vice Chair.

If the Vice Chair position was filled, they could then “stand in”. They could then look at adjourning the meeting for a short while to try and sort out a candidate, or adjourn for a few days or a week to get a candidate.
