At the Hemsworth Town Council meeting held on 24 March 2022, Mr Jim Kenyon, Chair was asked a question regarding the Marquee which him and his Independent colleagues chose to spend £7199.99 on and then a further £1200 on repairs, neither of which were voted on by the Councillors.

Mr Jim Kenyon defended this purchase and stated that “£9300 takings were because of it on bonfire night”.

Firstly, Ferret must remind Mr Kenyon of the lesson in business previously offered to him:

We need to know the “profit” Mr Kenyon and that is NOT “what we made”.

Therefore, Ferret being Ferret thought as though Mr Jim Kenyon seems incapable of telling the truth that this “claim” needed to be looked into.

A quick look at the accounts shows:

  • Gala Tent £7199.99
  • Gala Tent repairs £1200
  • Bonfire Night Security £2250
  • Police £2920.44
  • Fireworks/Bonfire £9000
  • Party Packs £29.39
  • Ebay £36.78
  • Howzat Act for bonfire £275
  • WPS Insurance Cover for bonfire £500
  • WPS Insurance Cover for bonfire £200
  • KFA Medical – Attendance at bonfire £720

And who could forget the:

  • Catering van £9000

Obviously in addition to this we need to add on the cost of the food and drink which were sold at the event, the utilities used, the additional staffing required and the clean-up required the following day.

Maybe if Mr Kenyon hadn’t flounced out of the meeting, closely followed by his Independent colleagues Stan Wilson, Gordon and Jean Eccles they may have been able to provide further clarification to Mr Kenyon’s “claim”.

It seems Mr Kenyon had a better offer, seen shortly afterwards at Wetherspoons!

How much did you “make” again Jim?

  1. Well there clearly wasn’t a profit as £9300, there was an obvious loss.
It’s all there to workout. They sold £9300 worth of drinks and food, which is called takings, not profit. The only thing they did make was a loss!!!!

  2. The whole point of paying for and operating a proper accounting system is to set up specific cost centres to capture both the income and expenditure of such events, to allow all Councillors (and precept payers) to assess the financial success of an event, to learn from this and make improvements the next time around.
Why don’t Hemsworth Town Council use the system properly and present this information?
We are paying such a lot in terms of the Town Clerk and his team, the systems, the equipment, the community centre offices, all the overheads etc.
We should be able to see this basic level of information without trawling through PDF transaction listings.
Please could our Councillors on the Finance Committee try to establish some improvements in 2022-23?
    Thanks.
